Bay of Plenty Visit - June 26

Visit Overview

During our travels through Fiji, Pacific Education was invited to make an unplanned visit to the Village of Bay of Plenty. We were warmly welcomed by the village community and honoured to participate in a traditional sevusevu ceremony, providing an opportunity to introduce Pacific Education, learn about the village, and discuss the challenges faced by local families.

The visit offered valuable insight into a community that is more remote than many others we visited.

Community Discussion

Our discussions focused on education, village life, and opportunities for future support. Village members spoke about the importance of providing children with the resources they need to succeed at school and highlighted the ongoing need for stationery and sporting equipment.

The community also shared that they had only recently been connected to a piped water supply.

Community Priorities

Several priorities were identified during our discussions, including educational resources such as stationery, additional sporting equipment, and improved access to essential services.

One of the greatest challenges facing the village is transport. Although located only around 15 kilometers from Sigatoka, the largely unsealed road network makes travel slow and difficult, with the journey often taking much longer than it should.

Looking Ahead

While this visit was unexpected, it reinforced the value of taking opportunities to engage directly with communities whenever possible. Pacific Education will consider the information gathered during this visit alongside future planning to identify practical ways to support the village and its residents.
